Low histamine foods I don’t eat

While it’s true that the foods in this post are technically classified as being either low in histamine or not triggering the release of histamine already in our body, they still aren’t part of my diet. Read on to find out what they are and why you won’t find me chowing down on them soon (or at least not regularly – we all need a treat sometimes). Please don’t however misunderstand what I’m saying here – elimination of foods long term isn’t healing. I found myself reacting to more and more foods till I was down to just a few. Wheat

Wheat was something I held onto for a long time, reassuring myself that it wasn’t contributing to the basket ball I appeared to be smuggling under my sweaters. I had myself tested for celiac quite early on in the game, before I’d even heard of histamine intolerance/mast cell activation, and was immensely relieved that the negative test meant I could continue scarfing down an entire delicious loaf of pizza dough bread. Oh the lovely yeastiness of it. Little did I know that, apart from wheat’s potential to cause an all out systemic inflammatory response in non-celiacs, (read my post It’s Not in Your Head, Gluten Hurts non-Celiacs Too here), and it’s ‘non-gluten based inflammation’ causing potential (read my post Wheat Triggers Inflammation Even if Yore Not Celiac here), the yeast in the wheat products was making my histamine go through the roof. I chased my tail for many years believing I had a candida problem, but it turned out to be something else that I’ll be covering in just a minute.

Most grains

Ye gods, the devastation of figuring out that it wasn’t JUST wheat causing my bloating, chronic and excruciatingly painful constipation, and inability to properly swallow (ever get that lump of food stuck in your throat and nearly pass out in agony and fear as it painstakingly inches its way down your oesophagus?), was actually caused by a number of grains. While we do already know that these grains share wheat characteristics that cause inflammation, oxalic acid is also a huge suspect. This actually turned out not to be the worst thing in the world because I eventually learned how to use non-grain flours for delicious baking. Though I’ve written a number of nutrient dense cookbooks, I’m the type of person who wants to get in and out of the kitchen as quickly as possible, unless I’m cooking a several course meal for friends, or baking. I love my baking and am never happier than when I’m elbows deep in a mixing bowl inhaling the gorgeous vanilla and cacao scents. Processed foods

When initially clinging to the low histamine food lists, I was reassured to find a number of my favourite foods on the allowed list. (Here’s a round up of histamine food lists for you.) Sadly this was because I was an incredibly unhealthy eater back then, believing that an organic pizza was a reasonable way to get my daily ‘five a day’ servings. My niece recently experienced some histamine symptoms while on holiday together. After a quick read of my blog she asked me to condense my advice into one easy (for a young graduate) to implement behaviour. I replied that she should give up processed foods. If only from a histamine perspective, something sitting on a shelf for months/years is no longer a fresh food. Bacteria = histamine. Not only that, but they’re usually jammed full of trans fats which create or contribute to inflammation. Trust me, if you have histamine induced inflammation, the very last thing you need is something else that triggers overall inflammation, even if it’s not directly causing a histamine increase. Citric acid

Ok, so please, hands up if, like me, you once believed citric acid used as a food additive is made from citrus fruits? Ay, those were the days, before I stopped to question pretty much everything I put in my mouth. Turns out it’s actually usually  made from mold that’s often grown on corn. Though they say the aspergillus is filtered out, it’s going nowhere near my diet. Except once every few months when I totally lose self control and buy that can of organic palm hearts for my salad. No getting away from that one. But this was one that threw me for the longest time. I kept reacting to foods and couldn’t work out why. It was on some lists as ok for us and other times I was told it wasn’t ok.  It’s in pretty much every processed food nowadays and in some beauty products. Chicken

While there is nothing more comforting to me than a home made chicken noodle soup or a beautifully roasted chicken (my stomach rumbled as I said that), this food I keep on one of the longest rotations imaginable. Not only are the poor chickens kept in terrible inhuman conditions that must raise their stress levels (and are passed on to us hormonally?), they’re fed inflammatory grains. How the chicken is cooked is also a huge concern, I loved mine very crispy and roasted, which triggers the formation of advanced glycation endoproducts. AGE’s trigger gut inflammation (specifically leaky gut) and all kinds of nasty stuff like unwanted mast cell activation. And guess what, crispy chicken skin contains far more than any food. Interestingly roasting other foods can make them up to three times more allergenic too.  You can read all about it here in my post Junk Food Triggers Allergies and Causes Leaky Gut. I have however managed to find flax seed fed chicken eggs that are super high in omega fatty acids at Whole Foods and a study on the anti-inflammatory effects of organically raised egg yolk.

Carrageenan

Is there a product in Whole Foods that does not contain this food additive? They get away with it because it’s derived from seaweed. Once it has been structurally messed with however it becomes so inflammatory that it’s used by scientists testing new antihistamines and anti-inflammatories. Go now and take a look in your food cupboard and beauty products. It’s literally everywhere. You can read more about it here.

Sugarcane derived sugar

This one is a very personal choice. For years I believed I had fructose malabsorption (yup that’s a thing) but it turned out that when inflamed, sugar of any kind is likely to trigger more of it. In my case I was eventually able to shake off the exhaustion it caused just by avoiding sugar cane. I later realised that any high glycemic index sugar (one that causes a high and then a crash of blood sugar) including honey and maple syrup (both touted as health foods) or any overly processed one like agave, had a really bad effect on me. Coconut sugar, while high in fructose, does not tire me or cause a GI response. It also works great in muffins, see above for a link to my free muffins ebook. But please remember, we’re all very different and what works for me might not for you.

Don’t let high blood pressure affect your vision

An eye examination can prove beneficial to more than just your eye health. Conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and excessive levels of cholesterol can all be spotted during an optician’s routine checks. Whilst this is hugely beneficial for catching irregularities that have gone by unnoticed, it also highlights the risk that other aspects of your general health can pose on your eyesight. One of the most common of these dangers comes with high blood pressure. Here, we outline how this affects your eye health and how it can be treated.

How blood pressure affects the eyes

eye-examination_250If you have high blood pressure, it is crucial that you have regular eye examinations as the disease can often show no symptoms until in its latter stages. These symptoms may include double vision and headaches. If the blood pressure shows at the back of the eye, your optometrist, with the help of our specialist retinal imaging equipment, will be able to observe signs such as spots on the retina, a swelling of the central retina (known as the macula) and small areas of bleeding in the back of the eye. These signs are commonly known as Hypertensive Retinopathy. High blood pressure also increases the risk of stroke and cardiac arrest.

The lowering and the control of your blood pressure is the mainstay treatment for Hypersensitive Retinopathy, which will allow the retina to heal itself over a period of a few months. Your doctor may prescribe you medication to help with this, but there are plenty of things you can do to lower it yourself. Make an effort to maintain a healthy diet with a regular exercise routine to boost your general fitness. Reducing your stress levels also plays an important part, as chronic stress is an important contributor to high blood pressure.

Always remember that high blood pressure affects all aspects of your health, including your eyes. Many expert optometrists such as those at Leightons for example can provide appropriate treatment and advice to anyone with concerns regarding eyecare, so it was worth contacting for further advice.

Don’t Forget the Soap: A SolveEczema.org Perspective on “The Farm Effect” and Eczema

Until I can finish a book or publish papers, I really can’t do this topic justice. And I’m not really sure users of my site (SolveEczema.org) really need much explanation. Once people really read and understand the site, and put the strategies into practice, what I’m about to say is pretty obvious.

A lot has been written in recent years about the “Farm Effect” — an astute observation made by early eczema researchers that people who live on farms tend to have less eczema than people who don’t. This led to speculation about whether the reason had to do with dirt or microorganism exposure.

While I am not discounting microbial involvement — please see SolveEczema.org discussions for a different take on probiotics and eczema, and the last part of this very short paper that I wrote https://thewinnower.com/papers/3412-abnormal-ampli-cation-observations-from-applying-the-engineering-method-to-solving-eczema-and-atopic-disease — I also think people are making this far too complicated (with far too much contradictory evidence that isn’t explained).

Researchers found a far higher rate of allergy, asthma, and eczema among children aged 6-12 who were from families of Swiss non-farmers than Swiss farmers. They also found the Swiss farmers had a higher rate than Amish in the US (who tend to be farmers, though not all). Researchers may have chosen the comparison with Amish in the US because they originally came from Switzerland, and may be genetically similar.

So, to summarize: The Amish had the lowest rates of allergy, asthma, and eczema. The Swiss farmers had less allergic diseases than non-farmer general population, but higher than the Amish. This relative difference was true also for allergic sensitization to various allergens on testing.

The significant difference between the Amish and the farm families suggests the need to consider other influences.

Additionally, Switzerland is such a small country where farming and the farming community is simply not that isolated from the rest of the nation. It’s nothing like the US where you might have to drive hundreds of miles to see a cow (or a farmer).

While Switzerland is an extremely clean country, let’s face it, the dairy industry is pretty important — it’s hard not to notice that there are a great many animals and a great many flies because dairy is so well integrated into the landscape. I just can’t see making a strong case that any population is that well isolated from any other there microbially.

But in terms of lifestyle, the general Swiss population of non-farmers is using the same kinds of new surfactants that everyone else in the industrialized world is using where eczema and asthma are so high. They spend more time in homes breathing the detergent “dust” from this use than do farmers, who spend more time outdoors.

Swiss farmers may or may not be using less of such products.  While I doubt they are making their own soap anymore — though I do not know — they do spend more time outdoors, away from breathing such dusts. Recall that these substances increase antigen penetration of membranes, including lung, i.e., to the immune system, it’s as if there is more allergen in the environment.

In the US, farming communities gave up making their own soap later than everyone else. In some farming communities, soapmaking remains a strong tradition. The Amish are one of those communities, probably the most significantly so. Although acceptance of the modern can vary among Amish communities, there is a strong tradition of soapmaking among the Amish. This essay about Amish life in the 19th century (search on the word “soap”)  describes the process.  While it can be truly difficult to get specific data, it’s very unlikely that this tradition has changed much, if at all.

This relatively new environmental factor — the use of these highly hydrophilic modern surfactants that I believe are amplifying “normal” allergic processes — has a much more consistent and close ecological link to allergy, asthma, and eczema increases than any of the other explanations, across time and geography. This factor should be included in these types of studies, because of the potential to reconcile so much seemingly contradictory evidence, not just when it comes to the “Farm Effect”, but also when it comes to the research on allergy and exposure to pets like dogs and cats (especially the contradictory evidence when it comes to cats), or studies of allergy in households that handwash versus dishwasher wash the dishes. Getting into details is a long discussion for another day. However, because these surfactants can so powerfully influence human membranes in a way that is known and directly speaks to allergy, I think it’s too bad the studies don’t include anything at all about this factor. Especially since, as in the study above, there is likely to be a big difference in usage between the populations.

The SolveEczema.org perspective reconciles the major inconsistencies in the research of most of these different factors, such as the Farm Effect. And the SolveEczema.org strategies, from experience, happen to lead to dramatic reduction of asthma and allergies in concert with eczema amelioration, not just for the child with eczema, but everyone in the household. And it doesn’t require getting dirty or rolling around in cow or horse … um … microbes.
