Hair Treatment | Scalp Dermatitis – Syrinx ZA Natural Skin Care

what is dandruffScalp Dermatitis or Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin which causes an oily rash with scales or yellow flakes and it can be painful and particularly embarrassing for the sufferer.

Seborrheic dermatitis not only affects the scalp, it can develop on the face and the centre of the chest.

Although sufferers may feel alone in their suffering about 3-5% of people are affected.

The same as most skin complains it’s unknown what causes Seborrheic Dermatitis but it is thought that a yeast that lives on the skin could be the culprit.

Although Seborrheic Dermatitis can affect anyone of any age it is common in people with certain neurological diseases or people with an immune deficiency which means that the immune system has a large part to play in this.

Unlike some skin complains such as Eczema, which can sometimes be caused by diet, foods do not seem to cause Seborrheic dermatitis to flare up. Although some foods have been connected to inflammation in general.  Flare-ups maybe caused by stress, tiredness, weather, and certain medicines.

Symptoms of Scalp Dermatitis

The scalp is unbearably itchy, inflamed, red and sore and oily flakes will appear that are white or yellow. This scaling can also appear on the face or the chest.  There can also be a rash that might weep.  The non-inflamed version of seborrhoeic dermatitis is actually the well-known dandruff or the lesser known name pityriasis capitis which is the shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp

Treating Scalp Dermatitis

As always its best to stay away from any triggers that you know about, here are some tips that might help.

If you have a high level of chlorine in your water, it can help to fit a chlorine filter, as chlorine is known to aggravate our skin.

Switch from harsh chemical based soaps, detergents and shampoos to a natural alternative, such as the Deep Cleansing Therapy Bar for washing.

Avoid like the plague standard dandruff shampoos, they are filled with chemicals and fragrances that might be a quick fix but will irritate your skin even more causing worse problems.
