Eczema: From The Inside Out – Whole Pharmacy

Skin conditions such as eczema can be, to say the least, irritating. I had learned long ago through traditional systems of medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, systems of the body can be related, such as how intestinal health can hold influence on skin health.

Where our medical system has made great advancements through specialized medicine, I find we often lose sight of looking at the whole picture. It’s like systems theory; our bodies do not work as isolated systems- they work as a whole system where we are only as strong as our weakest parts.

A few weeks ago I wrote about probiotics and their whole body benefits stemming from the intestinal tract. Today I had a customer come in telling me how her child’s eczema improved significantly with the use of Probiotic GI from Pure- this did not surprise me.

This mother was doing everything right. She recognized that her son had food intolerances to some of the biggest culprits- dairy and wheat, and a dairy and wheat elimination/reduction has been part of her child’s program.

Another customer who was dealing with eczema was getting no relief from conventional treatments. She told me that she consumed a lot of grains, thus I recommended cutting down or eliminating grains from her diet. Low and behold, she has noticed significant improvement with this alone.

Food intolerances are more prevalent than most people and practitioner’s recognize. Someone can be intolerant or allergic to any food, although some of the most common food intolerances/allergens are dairy/milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, fish, and shell fish.

A food intolerance can present itself in many different ways and areas throughout the body; including behavioral problems, skin reactions, restlessness, anxiety, depression and more.

When someone comes in asking me what I could recommend for anything from eczema to acne, I usually don’t begin with topical preparations. I first suggest dietary elimination of possible food based allergens, and some supplements which I find very useful.

Probiotics are foundational when it comes down to digestive health, and I often recommend the Probiotic GI. If someone has greater digestive issues, we will often step up to the Probiotic 50B.

Then I look towards immune support through whey protein and/or colostrum. If you are allergic to milk, you want to avoid these options, although both whey protein and/or colostrum can provide additional benefits.

Whey protein has shown to be a complementary nutrition-based approach to manage mild-to-moderate itchy, scaly skin and has shown to support immune function with protein, l-glutamine, lactoferrin and immunoglublins. Additionally the WheyCool from Designs for Health provides an additional 3 grams of l-glutamine, which has shown beneficial to digestive health and issues such as leaky gut. We prefer WheyCool due to its quality; it’s important to utilize a protein supplement that is highly purified, cold pressed and not denatured. Colostrum contains a wide-array of immunoglobulins offering support of digestive health and natural immune response.

If you or someone you know is dealing with a skin issue such as eczema, two or three of these tips might offer a great benefit.
