New ScratchMeNot Colors Raise Awareness During National …

Dallas, Texas – According to research, approximately 10 percent of children suffer from eczema, usually starting in infancy, a skin condition that constitutes an itchy rash. Many children cannot stop scratching long enough for their skin to heal. That is why ScratchMeNot Flip Mitten Sleeves are essential for young ones with eczema, for newborns to age 6.

In recognition of National Eczema Month (October), ScratchMeNots have unveiled two new colors, Papaya Splash and Puzzled Green. The colors coordinate with the National Eczema Association’s brand colors and work to increase awareness about the prevalence of eczema and ways to help ease its effects.

Andrea Thomas, creator of ScratchMeNots, is excited about the new colors and the chance to raise awareness. “Our children wearing NEA colors can help spread the word by educating those we encounter about eczema and how it impacts children and families,” she said. “Plus, the colors are great and can easily be worn with Halloween costumes.” Puzzled Green; think Incredible Hulk.

“With eczema, kids are constantly scratching itchy skin which causes skin damage rather quickly. We’re excited that ScratchMeNot Flip Mitten Sleeves prevent this damage by allowing parents to cover their fingers when they scratch and when the scratching has subsided, parents can open the mittens allowing hands free time,” said Thomas. When their hands are covered, children can still do all normal activities including playing, eating and writing.

Eczema Awareness Month is all about education, informing the public about what eczema is, how to treat it and raising support for continued research. Throughout the month of October, ScratchMeNot is offering $5 off of their Day & Night Duo Pack (coupon code: SMN5RP) or 20 percent off three or more ScratchMeNots (no code needed).  Visit www.scratchmenot.com to purchase and learn more about product benefits and initiatives.

Book Review: The Eczema Cure by Emily Bartlett – Cheeseslave

Eczema-Cure-Cover-Final1

Did you know that if you or your kids suffer from eczema, there are solutions that can get at the root of the problem, rather than just treating symptoms?

Not only is there a way to treat eczema from the inside out, but it doesn’t involve steroids, petroleum=based lotions, antihistamines or desperate miracle cures?

If you suffer from an eczema rash, which often includes having itchy skin that you just can’t stop scratching, even though you know that it only makes a bad situation worse, you have probably already tried all the conventional methods for relieving symptoms.

They may work for a while to clear up your skin, but for most people they do not work long-term and the disease returns. The basic reason for this is because conventional medicine seeks to alleviate symptoms, but doesn’t address any of the root causes of eczema in the first place.

Emily Bartlett is a licensed acupuncturist and expert in Chinese medicine who has helped patients suffering from eczema in her practice. In her book, The Eczema Cure, she uses her knowledge and expertise in order to provide a holistic treatment that may help anyone suffering from eczema.

What Does Eczema Have to Do with Digestion?

While wanting to stop itching and the appearance of a rash on your skin immediately is understandable, merely addressing symptoms, she says, is like “painting a rickety house”. In The Eczema Cure, Bartlett shows how you can stop wasting money on expensive creams, lotions and drugs in order to identify and heal the causes of eczema rather than just seek to alleviate symptoms.

Did you know that one of the common causes of eczema is related to poor digestion? Bartlett writes:

“Leaky Gut Syndrome is a condition where the lining of the small intestine is damaged. This allows incompletely digested nutrients, toxins, bacteria, and wastes to ‘leak’ through the intestines and flood the blood stream. The foreign substances entering the blood then cause an autoimmune response in the body, which leads to inflammatory and allergic reactions such as headaches, joint pain, psycho-emotional imbalance, respiratory issues and digestive problems, and skin conditions – like eczema.”

While often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all, she says that Leaky Gut Syndrome is most likely the cause of eczema in most individual cases, and provides ways to identify triggers, put out the fire (the immediate symptoms), strengthen defenses with probiotics and nutrients and heal your eczema with real food.

Why You Need This Book

If you or someone you love suffers from eczema, you will learn how to identify and avoid various triggers that may lead to eczema — such as your environment and the types of toxins you may be exposed to, various types of stress and how it impacts your body, and how improving your diet with real food can help heal eczema from the inside out.

In her discussion of defenses against eczema, Emily Bartlett discusses ways to lose the junk, which fats are good for you, how to make bone broth, render lard and the benefits of soaking and sprouting. Cultured foods, raw dairy and cleansing foods are also ingredients leading to better health and wellness, which are also beneficial in preventing or healing eczema.

She also not only offers several recipes, ranging from breakfasts and snacks to soups, main dishes and desserts, but also provides information on why the real foods used in her recipes are useful to you, and suggests ways of implementing them into your diet.

The Eczema Cure is not only useful in healing the skin disease for those who are suffering from its symptoms, thereby saving time and money on conventional treatments, but is also useful more generally with pertinent advice on being well.

Making a splash at bath time « This Is Guernsey

Buying soap adorned with children’s favourite TV characters might encourage your kids into the bath, but they might also climb out with scratchy skin.

“Children’s skin is so delicate that a harsh chemical can readily cause a rash, or even an allergic reaction,” says renowned hair colourist Daniel Galvin Jnr. “I found that some of the horrible synthetic ingredients in kids’ and baby shampoos are used commonly.”

There is a huge list of nasties to avoid if at all possible. “Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are two most common ingredients found in baby and kids’ formulas, and these are highly irritating to the skin,” warns Galvin.

“They’re also used as industrial cleaning agents to get the grease off factory floors, so you can imagine what it does to baby skin and scalps,” he notes, adding that in the last few years, several children’s products were found to contain formaldehyde (which can trigger eczema) and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are known carcinogens. But because they’re not necessarily added to a product intentionally, they don’t have to be listed on the label.

Other ingredients that may cause children irritation include parabens, petroleum and propylene glycol (PEG), as well as artificial colours and flavours.

When it comes to bathing your babies (no matter how big or small), plump for one of these purer potions.

Bring on the bubbles

Many organic bubble baths fail to score highly on the bubble-ometer, but thankfully, this is not one of them. Childs Farm is an award-winning and affordable range born in Britain and supports the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) by donating 10% of all profits to the charity.

If your children suffer from eczema or dry skin, it’s better to opt for a bath oil over bubbles. After her daughter was given an eczema prescription for products full of nasties, Lisa Johnson decided to make her own. The result is an organic body range, including a hugely successful Scratchy Balm.

Bar bar black sheep

Sometimes a good old-fashioned bar of soap is all you want to get kids clean, especially when they’re little. Bamford Baby is a capsule range which is Soil Association-approved and contains a beautiful blend of camomile, lavender and tea tree to calm and purify the skin, all sourced from the UK.

Perfect condition

After hair washing comes conditioning, but keep life simple with this spray-on product. Galvin & Galvin’s Dubble Trubble range is bursting with botanical extracts and natural and organic ingredients, meaning all the products smell good enough to eat. A few squirts of this conditioner and kids are ready for their PJs.

Knots can cause big problems after bath time. Banish tantrums, tears and tangles by using a Michel Mercier Untangle Your Day hairbrush. The 428 bristles, positioned at 32 different heights and 16 different diameters, glide easily through wet or dry hair. And for extra comfort, hold down the root of the hair with the palm of your hand and brush downwards.

  • Untangle Your Day Kids’ Detangling Brush, available for fine, normal or thick hair, £12.95 (www.michelmercier.co.uk)

Smooth operator

After baths or showers, even young skins yearn for moisture. A simple lotion is all you need and Aveeno’s body products contain naturally active finely-milled oatmeal, which is clinically proven to restore the skin’s natural barrier, allowing it to retain moisture and keep out potential irritants more effectively.

  • Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion with Lavender Aroma, £7.15, (www.boots.com)

Scratch that itch

For those who suffer with eczema or severe dry patches, it’s a good idea to apply an additional balm before bedtime. Apply the anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, wound-healing cream to any affected areas.

Susan Griffin checks out the Chocolate Unwrapped package at Mercure hotels nationwide:

I’m not what you’d call a chocoholic (in fact, I’m more what you’d call a cheese fiend), but I do have one particular sweet weakness – chocolate orange. The aroma alone is enough to make me go weak at the knees, so imagine my excitement when I was told about the Chocolate Orange Back Treatment being offered as part of the Mercure Hotels’ Chocolate Unwrapped package. The dual treatment began with the therapist massaging my back using brown sugar and a base oil (mine was restorative almond oil, but it will depend on a person’s particular needs). The granules felt heavenly being rubbed on a part of the body so neglected. Once the dead skin had been sloughed away and the muscles warmed, the therapist brushed the pure chocolate concoction onto my back and covered it with a light plastic wrap and towel. Turns out chocolate can be good for you, as it’s bursting with antioxidants and minerals, which is perfect for a deep cleanse. Think of it as a facial for your back. While the mask worked its magic, the therapist gave me a blissful Indian head massage (my boyfriend opted for a foot massage) and then the mask was removed with hot towels – an experience that’s a lot more comforting and enjoyable than it sounds. We left the spa with backs silky smooth and shoulders softened (even the sceptical boyfriend looked blissed out). That wasn’t the end of the decadence. As part of the package, we both enjoyed indulgent Chocolate Martinis – think gluttonous and gorgeously guilt-ridden milkshakes – followed by a delectable three course dinner, topped off with a ‘Divine Chocboard’. You know, I might just be a full-blown chocolate convert…

  • To celebrate National Chocolate Week (October 14-20) the Chocolate Unwrapped package is available from £169 for two people for stays throughout October 2013, at selected Mercure hotels around the country. Book before October 28. A decadent chocolate facial (55 minutes) is also available for an extra £30 per person.

Could Baby Pacifiers Help Reduce The Chances of Allergies …

BenadrylLogo (1)

The internet is full weird and wonderful tips of things you can try to boost the health of your kids.

Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish web hype from science fact.

Could this be the case with an idea slowly gaining popularity that sucking your baby’s pacifier could help reduce the risk of allergies in children? Well, yes and no.

The idea that sucking pacifiers can help reduce allergies stems from a widely reported study conducted in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The team of researchers looked at allergy sensitization in children at 18 months and 36 months, while also taking a note of parents’ pacifier cleaning practices at six months.

The study found that after 18 months children who had their pacifiers cleaned by their parents sucking it were 37 per cent less likely to have eczema and 12 per cent less likely to have asthma than infants whose parents cleaned pacifiers by boiling or rinsing.

After 36 months infants were 51 per cent less likely to have eczema although there was no significant difference for other conditions.

Researchers speculated that parents sucking their child’s pacifier could lessen the risk of allergy development through microbes transferred via the saliva.

The findings are fascinating, but it is worth pausing for thought before we all start sucking our kids’ pacifiers.

For instance, if the study only found a significant decline in relation to eczema, does this tell us anything about other allergies?

According to Bill Hesselmar from the University of Gothenburg team, the research can tell us about more than just eczema.

Speaking to NPR, Hesselmar said: “Eczema is the best disease to choose [as a marker] if you want to see if a young child is becoming allergic”.

Likewise there is the possibility that something else is at work here. The paper notes that babies whose parents sucked their pacifier were also much less likely to have been born by caesarian section. However this does not exclude the possibility that both the type of birth and parental pacifier sucking could have independent impacts on eczema.

But there is one definite factor which means we should tread carefully before classing pacifier sucking as a hallmark of good parenting: the size of the study.

Since we are still talking about a study of 184 babies, there may yet be more work that needs doing before we can draw any firm conclusions.

The team acknowledges that the size of the study could be a “potential weakness” and stress that “it is important to emphasize the need to re-evaluate the findings from the study in larger studies.”

Since often quite nuanced scientific finds are condensed down into short headline summaries, it can be easy to miss the point that this is about the need for further research before we reach rigid conclusions.

So while sucking your child’s pacifier could well turn out to be a beneficial move, it seems that we may not know for sure until some time after your baby still needs one.

Eczema Research Focus Month – House Dust Mite | Eczema Blues

Removing House Dust Mite even when there's no sensitization improves eczema

Removing House Dust Mite even when there’s no sensitization improves eczema

The above is a cartoon from Life of Eczema Girl. In the cartoon, I shared that there is no need to do crazy cleaning if the child does not have an allergy to house dust mite. Now, I’m not sure if I have to take back my words as I’ve come across this study that concluded that higher indoor house dust mite worsens the skin of eczema children, whether or not they are sensitized to house dust mite. The main points of the study are:

1. 95 patients of average 23 month old

2. Indoor house dust mite levels associated with the severity of skin symptoms, especially in eczema children who are not sensitized to dust mite

3. Possibly due to house dust mite being an irritant instead of an allergen

4. Practical implication to reduce house dust mite levels

How often is your cleaning? Did more measures to reduce house dust mite improve your child’s eczema? Do comment!

Sore Throat Tea for Kids | Eczema Won't Win

IMG_8755

I’ve been making this tea today for my dear daughter Clara (age 8) for a sore throat she has been complaining of (it’s been making it’s way around the house).  It’s worked so well for her that I wanted to share it so hopefully you or someone you love could benefit from it.

This recipe is for a child, I will note modifications you could make to make it more suitable for an adult (read: more potent)

Ingredients:

1.5 cups of water

1 scant tsp cinnamon bark chips

4-5 whole cloves

1 pinch between the pointer finger and thumb of marshmallow root

Bring water to a boil then turn down to a simmer.  Add herbs and cover, simmering for 10 minutes.  Strain and add honey :) that’s it!

For an adult strength tea, add a little more or each herb and simmer for 20 minutes.  Also, this tea will still be helpful even if you don’t have marshmallow or clove – just use more cinnamon.

Happy Sipping!

Where I buy my herbs: Mountain Rose Herbs has been wonderful to work with.  The customer service is excellent and the herbs are so fresh, you will truly be amazed!  Their essential oils are also very good – a very good price and high quality.

Early Probiotics Protects Kids from Allergies and Eczema | The …

An allergic threesome

People with allergies are more likely to also have eczema and hay fever (allergic rhinitis)—sometimes referred to as the allergic triad. Children are at higher risk for developing these conditions if one or both parents have allergies.

Gut health and allergies

About 80% of the immune system is located in the gut. Here, the body is exposed to different substances that “challenge” the immune system. It’s thought that beneficial gut bacteria (probiotics) help prime the immune system to respond appropriately to foreign invaders and not to react to things that it shouldn’t. Misdirected immune responses could show up as allergic conditions or as autoimmune disorders.

Earlier research by the authors of the new trial showed that pregnant women and babies up to two years old who supplemented with a probiotic decreased the child’s risk of eczema at two and four years.

The new study looked at these same children at age six to see if the effect on eczema prevention persisted. The researchers also tested the children’s sensitivity to common allergens and assessed the presence of asthma, wheeze, and runny nose.

Since different probiotics target different parts of the body, the study compared the effects two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium animalis (subspecies lactis), with placebo.

  • The prevalence of eczema was significantly lower among children taking the Lactobacillus supplement compared with Bifidobacterium and placebo, and eczema severity improved significantly in the Lactobacillus group compared with placebo.
  • Allergic sensitization followed a similar pattern, with no change in the Bifidobacterium group and significant improvements in the Lactobacillus group compared with placebo.
  • Lactobacillus seemed to confer protection against the development of inhalant allergies (such as dust mites, grass pollen, and animal dander) but had no effect on food allergies.
  • Neither probiotic had an effect on asthma, wheeze, or runny nose.

“A long-term effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus against atopic sensitization at six years suggests that this probiotic had immunomodulatory effects during the first two years of life which have persisted to the sixth year,” concluded the researchers.

Stop allergies before they start

Try these tips to cut your child’s risk of developing allergies:

Breast-feed your baby. Breast-feeding helps protect babies from many infections that the nursing mother has come into contact with, boosting baby’s natural immune defenses. Several studies have also linked breast-feeding with protection from asthma, eczema, and food allergies.

Feed them fish. Babies who are given fish before nine months of age are 24% less likely to develop eczema than babies introduced to it later.

Give probiotics a try. Check with a practitioner who’s knowledgeable about natural therapeutics for a specific recommendation.
